  1. Important information before you start ImgFun:
  2.  
  3. [1]  For all users, especially disk vendors:
  4.  
  5.     If users want to  distribute  imgfun,   please    do   distribute   the
  6. whole package  and  read  the  files  imgfun.txt  and    register.txt.  The
  7. following  descriptions  are  suggested  for  disk   catalogs  or BBS  file
  8. info:

  30. The  user  interface is  refined  from version  1.01  and  a  new  lossless
  31. compression format better than GIf is  added.   Please  read imgfun.txt for
  32. more details

  34. [2] system requirements
  35.  
  36.   1. imgfun.exe and imgfun.hlp together in a directory
  37.   2. at least a VGA and 300K free under DOS, 512k recommended
  38.   3. at least 1 MB  free  hard disk space, for image processing, 2MB
  39.      recommended
  40.  
  41.    For viewing images only, a hard disk is not necessary.
  42.    A disk caching program like smartdrv is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
  43.  
  44.     For users with a  486 computer, it  is  not  recommended  to spend your
  45. money  for a JPEG  compression  card for  the speed of  imgfun  in the JPEG
  46. part.   This  should  save  you at  least  several  hundred  dollars.   The
  47. current version  is compiled  by  a 16  bit compiler.  A 32    bit compiler
  48. will  speed  up   the program at  least  50%. A new  version compiled by 32
  49. bit compiler might be   available in  1993  for 386SX or above   computers.
  50. For    a   640x480x256  color  gif  compressed   by ImgFun ,the pure   JPEG
  51. decompression   part    takes around  7   seconds, and the   mapping to the
  52. palette takes about  6 to 8 seconds on a 486DX 33MHz system.
  53.  
  54.     For   most  compressed files by  ImgFun, users should  be able  to view
  55. the  images on  the  screen  within  15 seconds  without  decoding to  disk
  56. files on a 486DX 33MHz system.
  57.

  59. [3]. start the program in the following two ways:
  60.  
  61. 1. Test of the auto-detection mode.
  62.  
  63.     Type "imgfun"  to start the  program in the  auto  detection mode, then
  64. please use  the  function, Option, Directory,  image, to  set    the source
  65. image directory,  i.e., where your   image files are.   Then  use the File,
  66. View  function to view  your  images.  If everything  works fine, then just
  67. enjoy the package!!!
  68.  
  69.     If  you   start imgfun,    but  find   only   320x200  mode  available.
  70. Then please  install a VESA  driver, then restart    imgfun  to see  if you
  71. can get SVGA modes working.
  72.  
  73. NOT  ALL VESA  DRIVERS  ARE  VALID,  YOU MIGHT  END UP  WITH  320x200  ONLY
  74. AGAIN, OR PROBLEMS WITH INCOMPATIBLE VESA DRIVERS!!!
  75.  
  76. 2. Start the program with the standard mode only
  77.  
  78.     If  you  have problems  in    the  auto  detection    mode,  then type:
  79. "imgfun -s" to start the program with the 320x200 mode only.
  80.  
  81.     The  program   will be  able   to  run   on  any  VGA   system  without
  82. problems.  But  only  the standard   320x200  mode  available.  You can use
  83. the function, Option,  Display,  card, auto for auto-detection of your card
  84. or choose the SVGA  drivers  manually only when you are sure about the chip
  85. used in your SVGA card.
  86.  
  87.     My suggestion is that try  the auto detection   at your first time.  If
  88. anything wrong, then live with the 320x200   mode,  or  get a SVGA card for
  89. around $50,  for  example, Trident 8900  with 512KB  on  board.  A VGA card
  90. that  can  not display  640x400x256  mode  is  out  of date  and waste your
  91. investment on the VGA monitor.
  92.

  94.     When   setting  the  Display,   mode,  please   make  sure   you   have
  95. enough memory  on your  VGA  board,  otherwise   the   program   might  not
  96. function properly,  AND  YOUR   MONITOR   CAN  STAND   THE  RESOLUTION  YOU
  97. CHOOSE, OTHERWISE  YOU  MIGHT BURN YOUR MONITOR'S TUBE!!! REMEMBER THIS ALL
  98. THE TIME!!!
  99.  
  100.     After you clear  the  first hurdle of testing your SVGA,  then  you can
  101. start to play with the program.
  102.  
  103. [4] Configuration
  104.  
  105.     New   configuration  switches  for the  initial  card  driver,  display
  106. resolution, image directory, and help directory are available  from version
  107. 1.01.   Also  the  warning  bell  sound can  be  turned  off.  Please  read
  108. imgfun.txt for more information.

  110. [5]. On line help system
  111.  
  112.     The help system  is   activated by  pressing   F1  in the  menu   mode.
  113. Press the space bar  for  the   topic   selection   list.  Type  in  or use
  114. arrow keys to scroll  for the topic  you want, and then press Enter for the
  115. topic.
  116.  
  117.     For all   list selections, ImgFun will match   the topic name  with the
  118. keystrokes   as  you  type in,  usually  two  or  three  keystrokes will be
  119. enough.  For example, to  select  a format  from a list  of  GIF, PCX, BMP,
  120. JPEG.  To  select BMP,  then just type  'B', if  you change  your mind, and
  121. want  to   select  GIF, then   just type   'GG'.  ImgFun  will notice  this
  122. change  and   switch to the   GIF  format. The  first  'G' which   is not a
  123. following letter, 'M'  of  'BMP'makes  ImgFun  to  rematch from  subsequent
  124. letters   and   abandon   the  current   selection.   The second  'G'   let
  125. ImgFun  jump  to  the   GIF  selection for   closest matching.  It  will be
  126. better  for  users  to   try  on this   feature several times  for learning
  127. fast selection through  out  the package.  This is especially  useful  when
  128. locating a  particular file in  a long file list.
  129.  
  130. [6]. For the viewer
  131.  
  132.     There  are   two   ways  to  view  images.  First  use  the  File, VIEW
  133. function.   This   function  dumps   output  to   the screen  directly like
  134. other  image  viewers.   This  function  is always available even after you
  135. loaded two images.
  136.  
  137.     Another  powerful  viewer is available   AFTER YOU LOADED THE IMAGE, by
  138. the function File, LOAD. Then try the following keystrokes:
  139.  
  140.   Press F5: then the image will be displayed in the screen.
  141.   Press Page Up several times to zoom in. Press Page Down to zoom out.
  142.   Press: Left, Right, Up, Down keys to scroll.
  143.  
  144.     So far,  I  have not  seen any   package  can do  this software zoom as
  145. fast as ImgFun. Enjoy your images, especially gifs.!!!
  146.  
  147.     A  manual  slide  show   is   implemented   in  the Utility, Slide show
  148. function.   Read the  help file for its usage. The slide show  part will be
  149. much more powerful in future versions of ImgFun.

  152. [7]. Transparent Disk compression systems (Stacker for example) :
  153.  
  154.     If you use  Stacker  or  other  disk compression programs on  your hard
  155. disk, there's  no need for  lossless   compression of your  files   by LHA,
  156. LZEXE, or PKZIP, and etc. programs.
  157.  
  158. BUT THIS IS NOT THE CASE FOR JPEG LOSSY COMPRESSION!!!!
  159.  
  160. YOU CAN GAIN DISK SPACE  EVEN ON A TRANSPARENT  DISK COMPRESSION SYSTEM  BY
  161. COMPRESSING YOUR IMAGES USING THE IMGFUN PACKAGE!!!
  162.  
  163. [8]. the undo(F2) and update(F4) mechanism
  164.  
  165.     You  can undo all changes made to the   loaded image 1 by  pressing F2.
  166. The undo function  will remove  all  the  changes since the   last time you
  167. update  the  image. After  some processings on the  image,  you must press,
  168. F4, (update) to  make the  changes permanent. The  update and undo   should
  169. work as  a    pair.    This  makes  it   possible   for  an unlimited  step
  170. undo without more  memory than  a  one step undo. If  you prefer  one  step
  171. undo like   other  packages,  just   press  F4:update to accept  the change
  172. you just made,  or F2:undo to  undo the change   you just did on  the image
  173. after every step of processings.
